In tobacco plants, most of the oil is found in the seeds at about 40% oil/dry weight. The seed oil has been tested for use as fuel for diesel engines; however, tobacco plants yield only a modest amount of seeds of about 600 kg seeds/acre. Dr. Vyacheslav Andrianov and his team from the Biotechnology Foundation Laboratories at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, USA, have engineered tobacco plants so thatrntheir leaves express more oil. Typical tobacco plant leaves contain 1.7-4% of oil/dry weight.
