With SARS, avian flu and now swine flu, the world has had to learn quickly how to deal with airborne diseases. One of the biggest lessons is how to protect healthcare workers themselves.rnWHO discovered from its Western Pacific Region staff that at one point during the SARS outbreak, 41 % of SARS patients in Singapore and 22% of cases in Hong Kong were healthcare workers. A later study found that the infection rate in health workers was tightly correlated to the inconsistent use of personal protection equipment (PPE) and a poor understanding of infection control procedures.
