Women with preeclampsia (PE) have higher plasma concentrations of the anti-angiogenic soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (sVEGFR-1 or sFltl) and soluble endoglin (sEng) but lower concentrations of the pro-angiogenic VEGF and placental growth factor (P1GF). Eng is a co-receptor for transforming growth factor (TGF-β) and its soluble form inhibits activity of TGF-β1 and has anti-angiogenic effects against VEGF and P1GF. In a longitudinal nested case-control study, 144 singleton pregnancies were stratified in 1) uncomplicated pregnancies, 2) patients who delivered small for gestational age (SGE) neonate and 3) patients who developed PE (preterm or term, i.e., >37 weeks). Plasma samples were obtained at 4-week intervals for assessment of P1GF, sEng, and sFltl by sandwich enzyme immunoassays.
