THE LIFE on our planet is powered for the past at least three billion years powered by the sun. Solar energy harvesting has been pioneered by the predecessors of the present day cyanobacteria which utilized the molecules to transform the bundles of energy contained in lights (the photons) in to electronic excitations that funnel into chemical reactions and thus energy was stoned in the form of chemical energy. Green plants around us on the earth and even deep in the submarine undertake the judicious way of harvesting solar energy, subcontracting to the descendants of cyanobacteria - the chloroplasts. We now utilise the energy laid down in the bodies of dead cyanobacteria and later plants in the form of oil and coal as a cheap but unsustainable energy source. It is alarming indeed to realize that the increased levels of carbon dioxide brought about by rapid (on a geological framework of time scale) burning these fossil fuels may take us back to the climate in a state not seen long before the evolution of human species. Harvesting solar energy in an amicable way seems to be a greener alternative in harnessing the renewable source.
