摘要

Organic colorants are characterised by their ability to interact with the elctromaetic radiation. The manner in which they absorb electromagnetic radiation and the processes that can be tuned within the molecule during the interaction with such radiations make them interesting candidates in several functional applications. Absorption of electromagnetic radiation brings about several intriguing changes without destroying the molecular framework responsible for such absorption and thus we have a range of functional colorants with tailored applications. The use of functional colorants in biology and electronics is steadily increasing. The colored materials exhibiting photochromis, thermochromism, electrochromism, acidochromism, pressure-sensitive color change, photoconductivity, semicinductivity, and similar physic-chemical phenomena are increasingly becoming important as smart materials in several innovative applications.
