Antimicrobial Textiles: A Review

摘要

The growth of microbes on textiles during use and storage negatively affects the wearer as well as the textile itself. Consumer's attitude towards hygiene and active lifestyle has created a rapidly increasing market for antimicrobial textiles, which in turn has stimulated intensive research and development. In this article we review some of the contemporary antimicrobial agents used in textiles, including quaternary ammonium compounds, N-halamines, chitosan, zeolites, polybiguanides, triclosan, nanoparticles of noble metals and metal oxides, and bioactive plant based product and dyes. According to their mechanism of antimicrobial activity, toxicity, durability and ecological acceptability, these agents can be divided into biocides and biostats, leaching and bound antimicrobial, controlled-release and barrier forming agents. In view of the need for ecologically friendly antimicrobial finishing, much research has focused on the synthesis of antimicrobial agents. Examples of commercial antimicrobial products are presented to illustrate the active agents used and their finishing methods.
