The present study was undertaken to compare the colour fastness properties of silk, wool and cotton yarns dyed with onion peels using three metallic mordants viz., alum, ferrous sulphate and stannous chloride. Dye was extracted from onion peels in acidic medium and was tried on natural fibers viz., mulberry and tussar silk, merino wool, Tibetan wool and cotton. Metallic mordants were used to enhance the colourfastness of the dyed natural yarns. The colourfastness was evaluated against washing, rubbing, perspiration and light according to ISO standards. The evaluation of all the dyed yarns revealed that mordants improved the colourfastness properties. A single dye may have different fastness properties on different fibers due to the chemical structure and physical properties of the fiber.
