The global meltdown witnessed during the last few months continues unabated. Though the Govt. of India had announced three stimulus packages since December 2008, they have not produced any tangible results so far. No doubt, reduction of 4% in the Excise duty across board, downward revision of Service Tax to 10% from 12%., extension of Customs duty on Naphtha Import etc. are welcome measures to stimulate the sagging economy. The impact of these reliefs would be palatable in a few months time. The India Corp was very optimistic that the last Budget presented by the UPA Govt. would be liberal in announcing many a relief measure including tax concession. They were to a great extent belied by the acting Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee citing the propriety to present the full budget in view of the impending end of Govt. tenure.
