Metal ions are a problem in virtually all industrial processes that involve water. Textile processing consume huge quantities of water at various stages, the quantity depends upon the type of fibre, whether, natural or synthetics. One of the most common problems is the scale formed by alkaline earth and heavy metal salts on precipitation. Heat exchangers quickly become encrusted, pipes get choked, valves seize up. In the processing side, the presence of metal ions gives patchy dyeings, harshness, loss of colour yield, tonal change etc. There are many ways in which the problems of this type be remedied. Masking the metal ions by chemical means has proved by and large to be most effective. This involves reducing the concentration of free metal ions to such an extent -often down to only a small fraction of its initial concentration --that they are unable to act as catalyst or precipitate in reactions that lead to precipitation.
