摘要

Parmotrema tinctorium (Nyl.) Hale is a potential lichen species, found in abundance in tropical and subtropical region of the country. The lichen is used at commercial scale for colouring food and as a constituent of garam masala. Lichens being a pollution monitor absorb toxic metals from atmosphere and show higher ppm of heavy metals. The use of lichens directly in food may cause health hazard. It is more appropriate to use their extracted colours for food application. Under the present study, water soluble dye was extracted in 20% yield through aqueous extraction which has been found to contain heavy metals in affordable limits. The extracted colour has been found very suitable for dyeing silk and wool.
