The last four installments in this series on Technical Textiles, have covered four important market segments, viz., Clothtech, Medtech, Mobiltech and Protech. The market segment chosen for this installment is Sporttech which includes technical textile products and ideas encompassing the world of sports and leisure. Innovations are in functional textiles used in a variety of sports and leisure apparatus, facilities and outdoor equipment. The importance of this emerging segment can be gauged from the fact that at the 43rd International Man-made Fibres Congress held in Dornbirn, Austria during 15-17 September 2004, out of the total 84 lectures, 14 were on Sportswear, which formed next only to those on Protective wear Globally, in terms of value, this segment currently occupies the 3rd position in market share, only behind Mobiltech and Indutech segments. This position is forecast to be maintained during the next 5 years as well. Even in India, the position projected up to 2007-2008 is the 4th among the 12 segments.
