摘要

Molecules or molecular systems that may exist in two thermodynamically stable states are called bistable molecules or molecular systems. Such chemical species or assemblies, if capable of interconversion under the action of various external sources, engender the greatest attention and this interest is highly motivated by the fact that the bistable molecules and molecular assemblies represent, effectively, two-bit logic elements of nanoscopic size and have diverse potential technological applications in the realms of molecular electronics, photonics, and computing. They also play a very crucial role in the transmission of biochemical messages and signal transmission across biological membranes and photochemi-cally switched enzymatic systems.
