The key elements in various flame retardant compositions are from group Ⅲ of Periodic Table (boron and aluminium), group Ⅴ (nitrogen, phosphorus and antimony) and group Ⅶ (chlorine). Even after 125 years of research to produce better flame retardants, the same 3 groups account for the most effective ones, viz., group Ⅲ with boron, group Ⅴ with nitrogen, phosphorus and antimony and group Ⅶ with chlorine and bromine. Many theories on their mechanism of flame retardant action have also been postulated. Out of these elements, our focus now is on antimony. Earlier Sci-Tech installments, 2, 4, 8, 10, 11, 15 and 16 have mentioned the use of antimony compounds, especially of antimony oxide in flame retardant compositions for cotton fabrics. Installment 8, while describing the U.S. market share of flame retardant categories, mentioned antimony-based one as the second largest with 20% share in 1995, the position almost remaining unchanged in 1999 with antimony oxide-based flame retardants in the second position among 164 flame retardant products given in ADR's Annual Listing of flame retardants. Last installment described the use of antimony oxide alongwith Tetrakis (Hydroxymethyl) Phospho-nium Chloride (THPC) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and showed the importance of antimony oxide (Sb_2O_3) in this combination for producing flame retardant finish for cotton fabrics.
