Until about 25 years back, there was hardly any noticeable export of ready-made garments (RMGs). During the period 1980-1990, there was a dramatic change of textile production within the country as regards quantum as well as nature of textile marketing. With increasing population (at present over 1000 million), no doubt the textile fabric production has gone up, but at the same time it has become dispersed to the decentralised sectors. At about 15 meters per person, the textile fabric production has gone up to 15,000 million meters, of all types. The nature of exports have, however, drastically changed. From a fabric exporting country, India is now emerging as a major Ready-Made Garments (RMGs) exporting country. This is no doubt due to the high cost labour in developed countries, where it is now no longer as economical as before to produce RMGs at reasonable prices. As a result, India has the golden chance of acquiring a lion's share of the world RMG market.
