Developments in the dyeing of jute and jute blends with reactive dyes, natural dyes and 2:1 metal complex dyes have been reviewed. Jute is a natural biodegradable fiber consisting of cellulose 58-63%, hemicellulose 20-22%, lignin 12-14.5%, wax and fats 0.4-0.8%, protein 0.8-2.5% and mineral matter 0.6-1.2%. The cellulosic portion in jute is similar in structure to that of cotton. Cotton and jute occupy the first and second places respectively in terms of world production levels of cellulosic fibres. Jute, a multicellular bast fibre, is traditionally used for sacks, hessian, covering materials, ropes, rugs, carpets and other such applications.
