Ignition delay and limit of ignitability of a single sodium droplet: theory and experimental comparisons

摘要

Ignition of sodium is of great importance in the safety aspect of nuclear facilities because of its extensive use as a working fluid. Although research in Japan relevant to sodium combustion has been conducted for more than thirty years, little attention had been paid for a small-scale leakage that occurred in 1995 through a hole of a broken thermocouple. Since then, the importance to understand fundamental aspects of sodium combustion from the viewpoint of fire safety has strongly been recognized. Although basic research on the droplet combustion and pool burning have been conducted, there still remain many questions of its nature, suggesting the need for further studies. A research project organized by the National Research Institute of Fire and Disaster, Japan and Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute has begun to obtain new knowledge on droplet combustion. In this paper, an attempt has been made to determine the comprehensive parameters that govern sodium droplet ignition. Comparisons with experimental results have also been made.
