摘要

ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB) is continuing to urge members whose ships ply the seas around West Africa to be vigilant despite the recent fall in Gulf of Guinea attacks. While the total number of reported piracy incidents fell to 78 from January to June this year compared to 107 attacks for the same period last year, the region is still a hotspot and remains the world’s most dangerous for piracy. Of the 75 seafarers taken hostage onboard or kidnapped for ransom worldwide so far this year, 62 were captured in the Gulf of Guinea – off the coasts of Nigeria, Guinea, Togo, Benin and Cameroon. IMB’s Second Quarter Report reveals that 73 percent of all kidnappings at sea, and 92 percent of hostage-takings, occurred in the Gulf of Guinea.
