I had not thought much about the international-law protections for journalists before I left on a reporting assignment to southern Mexico. Working for a regional U.S. newspaper, I traveled with a companion in the late 1990s to Chiapas, where the Zapatista national liberation army controlled much of the Lacandon Jungle. We were detained briefly by soldiers, forced by bandits to flee on foot through a thick rainforest in the middle of one night, victimized by a brazen daytime theft, and whisked away from a murder scene in the open bed of a pickup truck. I realized pretty quickly the First Amendment was not going to help us.
