This study explores the mother-daughter relationship by examiningdaughters’ constructions of the mother-daughter relationshipin adulthood. Using the guiding concepts of symbolicinteractionism and interactional role theory, this study exploresthe discursive constructions of the adult daughter role throughdaughters’ stories of everyday daughtering. I conducted indepthinterviews with 33 adult daughters in the United Statesbetween the ages 25–44, each with a healthy, living mother.Findings indicate that adult daughtering is an effortful andagentic process that contributes to a thriving mother-daughterrelationship. Additionally, the agentic performance of adultdaughtering is largely hidden from society’s notice resulting inan unfortunate lack of language for role players to discuss it.Practical implications for mother-daughter pairs are discussedand tips are provided for practitioners who help mothers anddaughters thrive.
