This volume, organized for teaching, builds on the metaphor of face and the efforts people put into maintaining it. The authors define these efforts as "facework," "a set of coordinated practices in which communicators build, maintain, protect, or threaten personal dignity, honor, and respect" (p. ix). The authors' goals in the book include providing students an introduction to the academic literature on the topic, giving them practical knowledge—how to act and understand what occurs in daily interactions—and offering "useful examples" (p. ix). They organize the book in four sections.
