This paper presents preliminary results of our recent research on modal parameter analysis of adhesively bonded composite beams with structural defects. Free--free flexural vibrations of composite beams bonded by adhesive with different volumes of defects were simulated and studied by using finite element modal analysis. The influence of structural defects on the dynamic behavior of such beams was analyzed through frequencies and the deformation of elements that are located near the defect zone. the numerical simulations were compared with experimental results. The simulations were not only consistent with the experi- ments, but also revealed a possible damping mechanism which helps to explain the experimental modal damping data. A phenomenon that differs from the generally accepted opinion about structural defects and their influence on modal parameters was reported and discussed.
