I can't say I was angry to read the news story in Issue 427 that Facebook ran a psychological test on its users without telling them. And I can't say I was surprised. But I was surprised that it angered other people. As a retired scientist myself, I doubt the empirical rigour of the test, but that's by the by. What really matters is that Facebook exists not as a feelgood service for people to comment on their friends' holiday photos, but as a rapacious gatherer of personal information that it can sell to advertisers. It can make a lot of money this way, as, of course, can Google. So if a grou of scientists asks Facebook whether it can run a test to reveal how people behave on the site, it's not going to say no, is it?
