Network servers are multifunctional beasts that can be used for file and print sharing and as a platform for databases, email servers and other applications. Both uses are important but it's the latter we're concerned with here, as we take a detailed look at a number of high-specification dual Xeon servers. We asked leading vendors for servers suitable for use by a medium-sized company or large enterprise workgroup. Each server should be able to act as a host for a mix of local web-based applications, an Exchange email server and SQL database engine. A dual Xeon configuration is currently the preferred platform for such duties, supported by at least 1GB of memory and fast Raid-protected storage, all of which we requested. We also asked for Windows Server 2003 to be pre-installed for our performance tests, after which we left the rest of the specification up to the supplier. One or two vendors were unable to get products to us in time but we ended up with a representative sample from four of the leading vendors. All were well up to the task but, although supplied to the same basic specification, they differed in a number of key areas, from processor speed to storage configuration. Likewise the amount of redundancy built in varied considerably and there were significant differences, too, when it came to management options.
