摘要

If you've read the works of the late, and sadly missed, palaeontologist Stephen Jay Gould you'll probably be familiar with the concept of Noma, or non-overlapping magisteria. But for those of you who haven't (I expect it's a sizeable number, considering the rather specialised nature of his essays), it's worth explaining a little before I get to the eventual point of my discussion. Gould proposed that there is no innate conflict between science and religion, as they each have their respective magisteria or domains of professional expertise that have no overlap; science encompasses the empirical make-up of the universe, religion the moral, ethical and spiritual side of human affairs. Hence the non-overlapping magisteria. Problems can arise at the edges of these magisteria, where domains start to rub against each other or even encroach into each other's territories. Back on planet Earth, you're no doubt asking what all has to do with computer technology, and debating whether in fact your columnist is writing for the wrong publication. Bear with me, there is a point to be made; and one that helps explain a lot of the current problems within PCW's magisterium -the world of personal computing.
