Once upon a time, long, long ago, three analogue video disc formats were battling to become the world standard. Philips had Laservision, later to become Laser Disc. RCA pushed a bizarre system called CED Selectavision while JVC developed VHD. CED and VHD relied on a mechanical pick-up to track the disc, but Laservision used a laser, with no wear on the disc. But JVC was saved from a similar fate by the money from VHS royalties.
