This special issue of the journal is dedicated to high performance computing for Computational Mechanics. The issue contains seven papers, which cover theory, algorithms, implementations and applications to engineering problems. The first paper by O. Medek et al. presents a modified mesh partitioning method. Classical mesh partitioning algorithms provide domain decompositions with the same number of nodes and elements within each subdomain. This may result in an unbalanced computation of the Schur complements. The modified mesh partitioning proposed by the authors leads to better load balancing, which is extremely important in the case of systems of linear equations that are solved repeatedly.
