The past year has been a challenging period for Mexico as a string of factors have come together and impacted significantly its economic output and development programmes.rnIn the first six months of this year the nation's GDP plummeted by an average of just over 9% (see chart). The decline in Q2 09 was a massive 10.3% as manufacturing activity and construction projects crashed. In terms of Mexico's economy, manufacturing accounts for 80% of the nation's exports and between 20% and 25% of total GDP.rnMoreover, the second-half decline in output was severely impacted by the outbreak of swine flu, which affected all sectors of the economy and resulted in a further softening in consumption and a severe decline in the tourism sector.rnIn May, the Government imposed a five-day shutdown of all non-essential Government services and businesses to stop the spread of the AH1N1 flu strain.
