Rationale: the necessary ingredient for contributions to theory and practice

One of the most frequent criticisms of manuscripts is the lack of contributions to theory and/or practice. Often, these papers neglect a critical component of the paper: rationale. The rationale is necessary to justify the need for the research and the approach taken. We argue that contributions flow naturally if the rationale for the study is provided and justified within existing literature, assuming that the study is well executed. Editorials in other journals have discussed necessary components for a theoretical contribution (Whetten 1989, Feldman 2004, Crane et al. 2016). Within this editorial, we focus specifically on rationale with the hope of encouraging authors to proactively and clearly include rationale and justify their approach, which will enable the study's contributions to be clearer. Within Construction Management and Economics, the focus of contributions can vary between theory and practice. However, as with most domain-focused research, the motivation for the study frequently originates from a problem that is observed within practice. This motivation helps to justify why people should care about the study's results, in other words, it helps to address questions of "why" and "so what?". By starting with an observed problem, a researcher can then pose scientifically interesting questions that build upon prior research to address the problem. As Raymond Levitt, indicated: "You are almost never the first person to try and answer an interesting research question... if you are, the question may not truly be very interesting" (Levitt 2005).
