The 9/11 attacks precipitated not only the war on terror, but also the âwar on immigrantsâ in the USA. It represents the moment when various categories of nonâcitizens were forced to encounter policies and attitudes that together constitute a form of hyperâmarginalization. The convergence of crime and immigration control in the post 9/11 period has elevated the discourse of immigrant âthreatâ to new heights in the culture, justified crackdowns against nonâcitizens without concern for the collateral consequences of such actions, and fostered the perception of safety and security at the expense of nonâcitizens. The war on immigrants has many fronts. Some are clearly visible, while others are obscured from view. This paper presents some of these fronts in order to demonstrate the sheer scale of the war, and to consider its human and social costs.
