Whereas commercial printing workflow is characterized by a high volume of jobs, each of which consists of multiple pages, the technical complexity of these jobs is relatively limited. That is, most work is produced using process-color builds, with high-end jobs adding a fifth, sixth or (infrequently) seventh color, and some have coatings or varnishes. When it comes to substrates, there are really only two or three variables: paper brightness and/or color, and paper weight. If only things were so simple in packaging. On the "simple" side of the equation, there's only one component, or package design, that is going to be printed and converted. After that, however, the fun begins. Most jobs tend to require special colors or a combination of custom and process colors, and it's not at all unusual to run a job with eight, nine or even 10 colors. Then there's the substrate, as both film and board are often overprinted with a white (or other "base") ink.
