The metals of Periodic Group 12 show a wide variation in the extent to which their biological effects have been investigated. Both zinc and mercury have accumulated a substantial literature, zinc for its biological essentiality and mercury for its toxicity. The newest group member, element 112 (recently named copemicium), has not yet been found to show biological activity; however, that is likely to change in the years to come.
