Reading Wendy Wheeler's new book Expecting the Earth is something of a geological, or at least geographical, experience. In accord with the complexity of the topics she addresses, one feels that one is traversing a landscape complete with layers, folds, and the occasional rupture of the ground. She develops her own ideas in counterpoint with such a number of theorists from so many fields, that one really feels one is traveling not in the usual straight line, but on a mountain trail with many switchbacks where this moment's view is followed by an equally bracing vista from the opposite side, and then a sudden return to an earlier vantage.
