摘要

As president of the American Society for Cybernetics, Ranulph Glanville found a context in which to explore his concept of design and his understanding of how organizations function. This led him to an increasingly inclusive understanding of the field of cybernetics/systems theory and to experimentation in designing programs for the annual meetings. His leadership followed the first generation, in which the concepts of cybernetics were shaped by the pioneers involved in the Macy conferences (1946-1953) and the era when computer science exploded, leaving systems theory somewhat in the shade. His death leaves the Society still struggling to define its place in the Academy as both a discipline and a bridge between disciplines. My contacts with him stemmed from the involvement of both my parents, Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson, in the Macy conferences, and the different ways in which cybernetics influenced their continuing work, especially Mead's thinking about culture change and Bateson's thinking about learning, psychotherapy, and the environmental crisis.
