Features of X-chromosome inactivation among 40 women aged 74 to 85 are investigated, while 36 women (mean age 30) are studied as a control group. A generally accepted method of methyl-sensitive restriction and subsequent quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis of the (CAG)_n repeat expansion of the androgen receptor gene (HUMARA) are used. We did not discover any dependence of features of X-chromosome inactivation on age. In particular, in the group of elderly females only three of the 40 subjects (7.5%) had unequal X inactivation by comparison with two of the 36 women (5.5%) in the control group. A comparison of the data obtained here with published data shows that the difference in the estimation of X-chromosome inactivation of different age groups may be related to a number of procedural errors, that is, the high age heterogeneity of the groups studied; inclusion in the investigation of women with different genetic impairments, leading to a shift in inactivation; as well as different limits of differentiation between equal and unequal X-chromosome inactivation.
