In business folklore there's a story about the first Austin Mini. It's said that when it first came out in the late 1950s, its sale price was barely more than the costs involved in production and shipping -and that consequently its manufacturer made virtually no profit. How could this have happened? The answer, some say, is that no one at the time tracked the value chain or calculated the costs.
