Q: How did Sensient begin? A: Sensient has always been in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the US. It started in 1882 as a gin manufacturer known as Meadow Springs Distillery. With the advent of Prohibition (a ban on alcohol in the US in the 1920s), it moved into manufacturing yeast as a natural outgrowth of the fermentation process, and then branched into foods. When I became CEO in 1996,1 began to divest the low growth commodities businesses, and we began to invest in colours, flavours and fragrances. It was flavours that gave us the entry into the dairy ingredients business.
