The Concrete Quality Control in EDP Hydroelectric Schemes

EDP has contributed in a decisive way to the development of hydropower in Portugal due to investment in the construction of new hydroelectric schemes, and the repowering and refurbishment of existing hydropower plants. Currently, EDP has three new hydroelectric schemes under construction, which include the erection of five dams: Baixo Sabor (upstream and downstream), Ribeiradio, Ermida and Foz Tua. As the owner of these hydroelectric schemes, EDP has played a key role in the specifications of concrete and the quality control of the materials used in the construction of these dams. In this context, EDP selects the most appropriate type of concrete according to the type of dam and its rate of construction, and is also responsible for prescribing the concrete mixes used in these kinds of projects. The mixtures are developed with regard to special concrete properties, which are defined by performance-based specifications for durability, in order to achieve the 100 years working life currently required by standardization for these structures. Besides, with the purpose of defining a proper mixture for each application there are other issues which have to be considered, such as the methods used for mixing, placing, compacting and finishing the concrete. Moreover, in order to satisfy both Portuguese and European standards, EDP has defined very specific requirements for all the products used in concrete production. Therefore, the tender documents include specifications for aggregate production, cement and fly ash, admixtures, and water quality for concrete batching. This paper refers not only to the quality control system of the concrete used in dam construction, and its responsibility, but also to the studies developed by EDP in order to select the most appropriate materials for each situation.
