Directories of lawyers have been around for many years, primarily in the form of multi-volume printed sets. Since they are both cumbersome and expensive, the printed directories are typically available only in libraries and law offices. Other versions of lawyer directories, such as on CD-ROM, are available, but they are also very expensive. In the last several years, lawyer directories have become available through the World Wide Web. As a result, more people outside libraries and law firms have access to the directories, and there have been some substantive changes in the directories themselves. For example, some directories added fields for lawyers' email addresses or law firms' home page URLs.
