How do you get started in searching the scientific and technical databases? That is a question I got when talking with an online searching class at the University of Michigan's School of Information. The answer that many of us get started by having some background in the sciences satisfied neither the student nor me. That's how I decided to write this piece. Regular readers of this column may find this old hat. But I urge you to pass the information along to your non-technical colleagues and to new information professionals. A basic knowledge of the technical databases is good for everyone. As an extra, I have included a selection of Web home pages demonstrating entertaining engineering and scientific content. Some of these are very suitable for children and some are for those of us who are children at heart.
