As a classical and fundamental problem in operations management, the newsvendor model has been studied since the 18th century. Starting from the 1950s, the newsvendor problem has been extensively studied and extended to model a variety of inventory and capacity decision making problems. More recently, the model has been widely adopted to analyze supply chains involving perishable and seasonal products. Nowadays, a search of major research portals will find thousands of theoretical research papers based on this model. Every year, tens to hundreds of papers on the newsvendor model are added to the decision sciences and operations management literature.
