Armenia's nuclear program/plant is an outdated one and is full of risks due to which it has been declared a "regional security threat" by many regional and international agencies as it will have severe global consequences. Moreover, Armenia's government has been using its nuclear program as political maneuvering in the South Caucuses Region. Despite serious concerns of the regional countries and international community at large most recently, Armenia again made a decision to extend the operation period of the second power unit of the nuclear power plant in Metsamor, and at the same time activate the construction of a new nuclear power plant. Metsamor NPP built in 1970 was closed down after the devastating earthquake in Spitak in 1988, but resumed its operation in 1995 despite international protests. Chances of even nuclear proliferation are very high in case of Armenia whose citizens have been involved in these kinds of activities in the past.
