Today our lives seem incomplete without; mass media. The media (and journalists) canj revel in freedoms that seemed almost improba-ble a decade and a bit ago; the print sector continues to expand bolstered by digital tech-nologies and new media platforms. The elec-tronic media has advanced by leaps and bounds and enjoys unprecedented freedom but with this growth a sense of uneasiness has crept into civil society that at times media trespasses all ethical and moral barriers in its rush to inform the people. The recently emerged "breaking news" culture has taken on such ridiculous proportions that it would be funny if it was not so absurd and farcical. The Pakistani media is still young and growing; while it is relatively independent there are serious question marks about the degree of responsibility it demonstrates. A reason for this is the lack of trained and truly competent journalists hence professional standards have suffered. A prime task of any talk show on the electronic media must be to present all sides of any issue as this will empower audiences to formulate their own informed judgment, but this does not happen in Pakistan. Sensationalism is the name of the game. Objectivity has been one of the first casualties in our media, the reasons might be many viz poor pay, fewer expenses, battling for economic survival in the media sector, falling prey to pressure groups, etc. But the fact is,the thin line between rating vs credibility is slowly but surely disappearing, this might not be too surprising, considering that media organizations in Pakistan are owned by corporate, political, media persons who have their, own interests to protect.
