In 2008, after the election of President Barrack Obama, new administration re-visited the neglected Afghan theatre. After incremental escalations and surge, President Obama announced withdrawal of majority of U.S. troops by the end of 2014. This set in motion gradual withdrawal of U.S. troops and equipment starting in 2010-11. From 100'000 troops the numbers are down to about 50'000. In addition, large number of equipment is also being moved out or destroyed and sold as scarp. By February 2014, there will be only 34'000 American troops in Afghanistan and if a Status of Forces (SOF) agreement is not concluded between Afghanistan and United States then all U.S. troops will leave by December 2014.
