摘要

Differences between majority Sunnis and minority Shia communities of Muslims are well recognized. There have been theological debates and occasional violence between these two communities but overall both communities have been living together peacefully in several Muslim countries. Over the last two decades several factors have contributed to deepening sectarian divide mainly due to entrenchment of sectarianism into the political process. Rapidly escalating violence in Iraq in general and specifically sectarian violenpe between two communities in Iraq has added a new and very dangerous dimension to the conflict. U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq has unleashed new demons which have the capability of shattering the whole reqion.
