With independence in 1947, Pakistan inherited the Federally Administered Tribal areas of the West Pakistan Frontier Province, which had enjoyed a special relationship with the central government. The British had found it exper dient to deal with local Maliks, who were compensated by stipends and privileges to control the tribes and. Assist the government in keeping the area under a loose kind of control. The army was stationed in a few cantonments in the area and came to the assistance of the locally recruited Frontier Constabulary, or "Scouts" as they were called. Civil service officers, known as Political Agents, represented the central government in the area.
