The seed of British Indian army was planted with the arrival of the East India Company. The scene of eighteenth century India was that of a crumbling empire with emergence of numerous centers of local power. The field was open for all kinds of adventurers, both local and foreign. East India Company arrived on these playing fields which needed a certain degree of bravado along with liberal use of intrigues. Local guards employed to guard trading posts and warehouses in India gradually evolved into an army when the role of the company changed from trading to territorial expansion.
