When a service life results in injury, illness or death, the response of a nation in providing a system of compensation must be seen as a defining characteristic of its relationship with its armed forces. This was acknowledged by government in the creation of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS), which replaced the War Pensions Scheme in 2005.With the compensation system established, the contentious issue of financial security for armed forces personnel injured or made ill as a result of service has ensured that the administration of the AFCS has been the subject of debate ever since.
