摘要

Over the last 10 years, the Spanish Armed Forces have undertaken an upgrading programme of their counter-explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) equipment. Advanced sensor and disruption technologies have been introduced to what is considered to be the world's fourth largest fleet of EOD robots - an investment in technology aimed to reduce the threat to ordnance disposal personnel and keep Spain at the forefront of counter-EOD capabilities.1This is a status that owes as much - if not more - to decades of domestic counterterrorism as it does to Spain's contribution to the ISAF effort in Afghanistan. From the early 1970s, Spain suffered bomb attacks by Basque separatist groups - including the assassination of Prime Minister Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco in 1973 by what would be identified today as a roadside IED.
