Experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan have emphasised once again the vulnerability of the supply chain, particularly in an asymmetric war with no identifiable front line. Nonetheless, because equipment investment in such conflicts will tend to follow the casualty lists, the emphasis until relatively recently has been on ensuring that those at highest risk - those in forward operating bases or undertaking vehicle borne patrols - have the protection that they need.
