Research and technology (R&T) investment is the lifeblood of high-technology industries, from Pharmaceuticals to biotechnology and defence. A visible and valuable consequence of it plays out in all these fields, from more effective medicines to higher quality equipment for our armed forces, which often saves lives.rnYet the MoD's R&T budget stood at ￡540m in 2007/8 and ￡502m in 2008/9, ￡471m in 2009/10 and ￡439m in 2010/11. This is a cumulative cut of over 20% in three years. To put things into perspective, the R&T budget constitutes around 1.6% of the MoD budget, yet short-termism has allowed it to be one of the easiest elements of defence funding to cut with little consideration of the impact it will have on future equipment.
